Celebrating World Architecture Day

To celebrate World Architecture Day, we sat down with our Director of Architecture, Michael Garringer for a candid conversation about what drives his work and how architecture can be a force for positive change.

From the first spark of inspiration in the 4th grade to leading impactful community-centered projects at RQAW | DCCM, his story reminds us why great design matters and how it helps build safer, more supportive environments to keep our communities connected.

What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?

I was fortunate to have a neighbor who introduced me to architecture at a young age. That early exposure sparked a passion that has stayed with me ever since, and I’ve been on this path since the 4th grade. Architecture offers a unique opportunity to positively impact communities, and that sense of purpose has always driven me. It’s more than designing buildings; it’s about shaping environments that improve lives.

This year’s World Architecture Day theme emphasizes resilience and equity in the built environment. How does RQAW | DCCM incorporate this into designs for clients?

At RQAW | DCCM, we approach every project with a deep commitment to creating spaces that are inclusive, sustainable, and adaptable. Resilience means designing buildings that can withstand environmental and social challenges, while equity ensures that our designs serve all members of a community. We engage stakeholders early, prioritize accessibility, and integrate sustainable materials and systems to ensure our work reflects these values in both form and function.

What project at RQAW | DCCM has been the most meaningful to you?

One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on at RQAW | DCCM is the Fishers Parks Community Center, scheduled to open on November 1, 2025.  It stood out because of its direct impact on the community and the collaborative spirit it fostered among our team and stakeholders. Seeing how thoughtful design can transform a space and improve the lives of those who use it reinforces why I chose this profession.

What do you find most rewarding about leading the architecture team at RQAW | DCCM?

Leading the architecture team at RQAW | DCCM is incredibly fulfilling. I get to mentor talented professionals, foster innovation, and help shape a culture that values creativity, collaboration, and excellence. Watching our team grow and succeed, both individually and collectively, is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.

What advice do you have for the next generation of architects?

Stay curious and never stop learning. Architecture is a constantly evolving field, and the best architects are those who embrace change and challenge. Listen deeply to clients, communities, and your peers, and always design with empathy. Your work has the power to shape lives, so approach every project with intention and care.
